Hello guys,

I am new to this forum and has joined with the intention that it will assist me in getting useful and reliable knowledge from professionals. I have a reciprocating compressor installed in my plant. There are two stages, first stage compress gas upto 4 bar pressure having suction temperature 30oC and discharge temperature 108oC. The second stage compress gas up to 8 bar having suction temperature 43oC and discharge temperature 100oC.

I am looking for material that can be best utilized in compressor suction and discharge valves keeping in consideration above conditions.

Can someone please recommend me any suitable and effective material?

Any other information could be provided if need

You will need to provide some more information to get a good answer: gas, compressor speed, operating experience, etc.. Either a metallic of peek plate will probably work, but you need to understand the operating conditions. Hoerbiger, Cook, and others will be able to provide you’re their experiences. There are many reputable valve companies you can solicit that will be glad to share and offer you an alternative to what you have.
If you have a bad actor, the valve may not be the problem, but you have not offered much information…

Dear nicklekid,

The compressor is a double acting two stages equipment handling methane gas most of the time. Piston speed is 3.11 m/s. I have uploaded herewith a snapshot of compressor data sheet for your perusal.

If lubricated, metallic plates are acceptable.

Dear niclekkid,

Could you please be specific which metallic material for valve plate and damper plate?

Often 400 series SS is used, but you need to look at the gas analysis to start...

"Handling methane most of the time " ?

Very often, materials are chosen for what is being handled sometimes, and also for the minor components in the gas stream.

I am not sure you will have any advantage spelling out valve material if this is an inquiry unless you have a specific preference or knowledge of the application. An OEM or valve manufacture may have an offering most suitable and cost effective for the application. What I am gathering that no prior knowledge exists, or the specific cylinders, rpm, valve type/quantities are not known. Why get into a detail that may cost you performance by overlooking a simple thing that someone else could have prevented?
