Hello,
I’m simulating bolt preload and comparing the reaction forces and stress results in Abaqus.
I have modeled 3D bolts (using Hex elements) with appropriate tie and friction contacts and solved for bolt preload case to check the reaction force and stresses at the bolts location.
Then, for second case I have replaced the 3D bolts with 1D beam element (B31) using suitable kinematic coupling and solved for same preload. Also, the diameter of the beam is same as the shank dia. of the bolt (e.g. 10 mm for M10 bolt).
After comparing the results of both cases it is observed that stresses in case of 3D bolts are higher than compared to 1D bolts. Also, the reaction forces of bolts are not matching.
Can anyone please tell me how I can match the results of both cases or the results obtained by me are correct? If so, then why there is a difference in reaction force?
Note: - I’m only concerned with the results at the bolting location.
