Raw Sewage Temperature 1

For purposes of force main design what temperature should be assumed for raw sewage? Metcalf & Eddy says 50-70 degrees F depending upon location. The area in question is southeastern U.S. Does anyone know where I can find more specific data on sewage temperature?

As far as I know the temperature of raw wastewater, unless it is extreme, would have no effect on the design of a force main. Why do you think it would ?

I understand that the temperature of the pumped fluid will affect the pressure rating of HDPE pipe force main. The lower the temperature the better the pressure rating. At 73 degrees (temperature at published HDPE pressure rating) I am just slightly below the pressure rating I need. I ASSUME the temperature of raw sewage will be below this, but I would like to have some supporting data or reference material.

Ask yourself, what is the cost difference between the pressure rating of the pipe you are considering and the next higher class ? Unless it is considerable, I would think it is safest to go to the next higher rating. Unless you know, or can relaibly predict, the temperature of the raw wastewater this seems to me like false economy. You might also consider a different pipe material which is not so sensitive to temperature. Both ductile iron and PVC pressure pipe are such materials.

published data (if available) will not provide the assurance you desire - as it won't be specific to your design. Get a thermometer and go down to the treatment plant. Or call up the plant operator and get him to do it.
