We are about to do some Random Vibration Testing in an external Lab, and have been asked about the "Sweep Rate" for the testing. I cannot see what "sweep rate" has to do with Random Vibration Testing. Have I missed something?

Thanks for any input.

No, you are right. I suggest you switch to a different lab.

Thanks Greg. Good to get a confirmation that I have not lost the grip completely.

Some people will want to perform a sine sweep before and after a random vibe test.

The purpose for that is to see if you "changed" something as a result of the random vibe test.

Did you also request a sine sweep or sine vibe?

Umm. There is perhaps a sweep rate associated with random vibration testing.

I once flight-qualified a tungsten heater filament for a space booster launch. The vib. tech and I joked that the test would likely have a high sweep rate - and the stress analyst who was also there to witness the test gave us a puzzled look and started to object.

Then I explained that we meant how often we'd have to sweep up the broken pieces...
