Is there any way (and how) to adjust Solid Works to efficiently use RAM memory?
I recently added 1 GB of RAM but didn’t notice difference.
Also, could anyone recommend a good graphic card for Solid works?

I went from 512 to 1 G and could not tell the difference. I'm off to the faq's----

Are you using all of your existing RAM? RAM won't speed things up unless you actually need more. If you need more speed and are not using all your RAM at present, update your chip (which will probably require an updated motherboard and other things).

I added one more slot of 1 GB but as mentioned didn't see any difference, and I am not sure how to figure out if I am using all RAM, and not sure how to update chip. If you know pls. let me know.

If you open a large assembly, and hear your hard drive constantly being accessed, chances are you are running out of memory.

Ctrl-Alt-Del and pull up your Task Manager, look at your Performance tab. You should be able to see your CPU usage and Memory Usage.

Something else I found, I read that you should only have 30-40 processes running at a given time. If you have more than 50, chances are you have malware/spyware on your computer, and should run some programs to get rid of them.

for ass'y with total # of components = 4000, CPU usage is between 47% & 65%.

did you go above 2 GIG, because if you did, there is some windows (specific) stuff that you have to do in order to utilize the greater amount of ram.

The bottom graph of the Task Manager (Performance tab) will tell you how much RAM you're using.

See the latest two posts from MadMango and wes616. Important.

Since you say you didn't notice any increase in performance, I'd say you may be maxing out your processor. Please post your system stats (chip, RAM, Operating System and Service Packs, SolidWorks version, etc. etc.) for better feedback from everyone. Also, check how many processes you typically have running (Processes tab of the Task Manager) while running SolidWorks, as well as the anti-virus/Internet security you're using. I once had an NT system completely taken out by trojans.

if you (wes616) know what has to be done with windows in order to utilize memory usage pls let me know.
I don't think that I have any virus problem because I frequently check that.

If you rotate an assembly and the parts turn into blocks, is that a ram or video card issue?

No that's a setting within SWx....for the life of me I can't remember where it's located most likely large assembly mode

Tools > Options > System Options > Performance > "Remove detail during zoom/pan/rotate"

Been out of the office all day today, so just read your post.

I am not sure how to do this, since our IT support did it for us, but it is within how XP handles RAM. So I would do a site search on the microsurft website and see if you can find something. Please post if you do, I'd be interested to know myself.

I'll also email our IT guy.
