I am working on railroad embankment design. The emabnkment will support three tracks. Does anybody know how much railroad surchage is generally considered for the embankment design?
Try the attached file. Pay special attention to the equation Ps: 2q/pi (...)on the top of page A-3. Some texts & geotechnical reports only show q/pi(...), leaving out the 2.
In my experience, most railroads are very specific (insistent) as to the required surcharge load and pressure formula that are to be used in design. Check with the railroad.
another important thing is the ground borne vibration induced by the trains over this embankment.Of course we are talking about dynamic surcharge(conventional and high speed trains).
