4.1.1(c)In frames for which lateral stability is provided by diagonal bracing, shear walls or equivalent means, K shall be taken as unity, unless a lesser value can be justified by rational analysis.

What is the difference between “taken as unity” and “taken as 1”?

I have seen a lot of papers using “taken as unity” instead of “taken as 1”, why?

Thanks.

Language preference.

unity is equivalent to 1

semantics

Unity sounds more intellectual, we are engineers after all.

The Construction Specifications Institute once published MP-1-10, "Specifications Language", where they gave rules for spec writing. For numerals, they suggested that numbers less than 13 should be written in words. Examples they gave were 13, 16, 20, twelve, ten, nine, five, and one.
