"Standard" Distribution Transformers built before 1981 problems 2

We have 17 7.5MVA xfmrs on our site, a testing company has said that "Standard" transformers are no good and he would never energize one. All test on the transformer come back to todays acceptance standards level. The testing company has not come up with any proof of problems yet. Have any of you had problems with this type of transformer. We have been shuting down and starting up these units at least once a year for 30 years with no problems.

Why does the testing testing company say that? They may be way off base or you may be living on borrowed time. Hard to tell from what little information you provided.

Because they just happen to have a replacement for it. That is the only reason I can think of. Being a testor myself I would never be a supplier unless the item is obviously blown up. In this case they should have kept their mouth shut.

Specifics, please. You haven't provided any basis for agreement or disagreement with their conclusions since we have no idea what their conclusions are. What the heck is a "standard" transformer anyway? Details, we need details.

Standard is a brand, made in India. I have run into them before but not enough to judge quality.

Every OEM has at one time, made some product, for a period of time that was junk. Meaning high failure rates. But unless test results show a problem I would not replace something that works, and tests fine.

You have some test results to show us?

To save time, every test that was done pf ttr pi etc including dga of the oil tested to NETA acceptance levels for a brand new unit. I have built an argument to get rid of this testing company and there recommendation but wanted to be sure.
Standard did make some smaller pad mount under 1000kva that were junk for a little while.

I believe the company was called Balteau Standard, Medford Oregon. Again unless there is something specifically showing up with poor test results, what justification does testing company have?

I prefer Fords, but does that mean all Chevys are junk?

I would not replace a transformer unless it showed signs that it needed replaced. If all tests check out good, keep the transformers in service. Transformers are the most reliable peices of equipment in a transmission or distribution system. I would not go replacing expensive equipment based on somebody's opinion when the equipment shows no signs of anything wrong.
