"$" prefix of an attribute

Generally speaking, any attribute name that starts with a '$' are attributes which are generated by the NX application and thus are referred to as 'system-defined'.

I am building a drawing template and i want to use an attribute for the description of the part.
The drawing is based on a master model and the views are of the template and not the inner parts.
For example in the below assembly structure, the views in "assem_dwg" will be of "assem_dwg" and not of "assem".

There is already a built in "$DESCRIPTION" attribute and I don't know how it would react with the "DESCRIPTION" attribute I want to use for propagating the information of the assembly and parts to the drawing.

While 'system-defined' attributes behave in some respects like 'user-defined' attributes, they unfortunately can only be used in those places where they are specifically designed to work, such as when assigning the content of a cell in a Parts List or something like that. However, for general use, such as linking to a note or expression, they are often not compatible.

depending on the NX version you run, Attributes "look " quite different. The basic functionality is still the same but the scope is much larger in NX8.5 (NX8.0 ?)compared to NX7.5,and again NX10 has enhancements.

In pre NX8.5, what you should do is think through your partslists, what attributes shall we use in the parts list. Then you open the model template and create these attributes, and you set the value to "-". ( Example A_Descript = - Where i used an "A_" to differ all "our" attributes from the other.)

Then all your parts based on this template has the spelling of the attribute title 100% correct and all you need to do is edit/replace the the value ("-") with some correct info.
