Really need to find some info on 15-5 PH ASAP.

I talked to two metallurgist today one from AK and another from Castle and neither could really could provide any useful info. These questions apply to round bar.

Questions:
Is all 15-5 remelted (an important question)
How many and what types are available
I have seen references to type 1 (VAR) and type 2 (SAR?)

Any on-line sources (I’ve looked and have not found much more than chems and physicals) that might help would also be appreciated.

Thanks!

No, not all 15-5 is remelted. AK Steel does not remelt 15-5 (see 2nd paragraph of page 3 of the following):

There are a number of ASTM standards such as ASTM A 564, A 693, and A 705 (alloy listed as XM-12) that do not require remelting. The SAE aerospace standards AMS5659 and AMS5862 do require remelting (consumable electrode vacuum melting). These standards can be obtained from ASTM and SAE directly, or from IHS (
There are a number of producers of 15-5 PH SS in the United States, including Latrobe Specialty, Carpenter, Allegheny Ludlum, Allvac, and Universal Stainless. All of them have some amount of information available from their websites:
