I took a dynamics of structures course a while back and have forgotten some of the concepts. I have a question about damping values. Maybe someone can explain it in simple terms. Does a higher number mean that there is less "damping" and the structure is more free to sway or more "damping". Typical damping values are 1%, 5%, and 7% where I'm at used for response spectra. When I look at these different RS, what is a quick/easy way to look at the difference between these? Damping is directly associated to the frequency and period, right?
