Question about AutoCAD LT features... 1

I used AutoCAD Electrical 2006 to import JPEGs and measure radiuses of curves shown in JPEGs in the past. Is the JPEG import functionality the same with AutoCAD LT? As long as I can import the JPEG and draw on top of it I should be fine.

They removed that feature from LT a few years ago. If that is what you're looking for, stay away from LT.

When I lost that functionality (that I used a lot) I went looking for something that would let me both open .dwg files and draw stuff that could be opened by others in AutoCAD. I tried a couple of knock-offs and both ended up irritating me to the point of uninstall. I ended up buying a stand-alone full version of AutoCAD 2006 and I don't plan to upgrade until I seed the fires of hell frozen on my front lawn. I hear people using R14 all the time so I figure I'm good until I get forced into Vista or 2014 whichever comes first.

Not sure if I communicated what I'm trying to do very well- I just need to import a .JPG and draw on it; it does not matter if I can only save the final drawing as a .DWG or not...

There was a .dwg file available on the AutoCAD LT forum that was created in the full version of AutoCAD that could be opened by LT and you substitute your .jpg for the one in the file. I have it somewhere, but you might find it quicker on a search at the LT forum.

If so that'll be great, otherwise I'll be looking at a full version of 2008.

Google LT Extender, and check it out. It adds a lot of full blown AutoCAD functionality to LT.

I found this online to do the same thing, paste a image in 2008LT so i can draw on it, works great for me!!

BINDING RASTER IMAGES
1. In AutoCAD, run the INSERTOBJ command.
2. Choose "Create New", then choose "Bitmap Image".
3. Next, Windows Paintbrush should open up.
4. In Paintbrush, choose the Edit menu, then PasteFrom
5. Select your existing image file (JPG, BMP, PNG, TIF, etc.)
6. While still in Paintbrush, choose File, then Exit and Return to AutoCAD

Download a demo of AutoCad Lt 2008 before your buy. I did and was not pleased. AutoCad has gone to .NET technology and in my opinion has bloated AutoCad LT 2008 beyond its intended purpose. It is now (more than ever) just a badly crippled version of the full AutoCad.

I found CADianUSA.com and downloaded a demo of their software. I discovered that this IntelliCAD engine software package is a very close clone of AutoCad LT. (Same commands, same dwg files. The icons are a little different.) There is one big difference that was very strange. Their full functional demo never crashed like my old trusty, AutoCad LT 2000 does.

Yes, it also imports raster images. There are also COGO, profile and earthwork modules for it at far less than AutoCad. I wish AutoDesk would get a clue and give engineers and designers what we want. However, they never will if we keep sending them money.
