Can anybody help me out.
I have to weld a Duplex stainless steel of P no. 10H .The desing code is ASME B31.3. code only mention that PWHT is required but it does not give PWHT cycle for it.
What cycle i need to follow?
Toughness test is also required in PQR.

Hi lahane,

I just checked my ASME B31.3-2008. It says that PWHT is neither required nor prohibited. Thus you have a choice.

I have recently also worked with 10H material where we did not PWHT according to metallurgical recommendations. I would suggest you contact a metallurgical engineer with your specific conditions/requirements.

You could also try post this thread under the Metal and Metallurgy section of Eng-Tips.

I am a metallurgical engineer with lots of duplex welding experience and as stated above, B31.1 does not require PWHT and it not recommended if welded properly. If you use poor welding practices you can get detrimental intermetallic compounds in the weld and HAZ which can hurt both the corrosion resistance and ductility. Theoretically these can be dissolved by a solution anneal heat treatment, but the entire spool would have to be heat treated as doing the solution anneal locally would hurt the base metal in the temperature tansition zones away from the weld being heat treated
