PVC Pipe Questions 2

I have a few questions regarding PVC pipes (6" and larger).

1.) What is the difference between ASTM D1785 (Scheduled), ASTM D2241 (SDR), and AWWA 900,905?

2.) Are the ASTM pipes solvent welded bell & spigot pipes, while the AWWA pipes are gasketed bell & spigot?

3.) Are solvent welded connections considered restrained joints?

4.) I need to cap the end of a 24" PVC pipe. Do they sell a bell cap that can be solvent welded or gasketed to the end of the pipe?

1) The ASTM D1785 has the same OD as Schedule steel pipe f the same diameter. ASTM D2241 has an OD based on its dimensional ratio (Nominal diameter/wall thickness). C900/905 has the same OD as the same size ductile iron pipe.

2) The ASTM pipes can be either solvent weld or rubber gasketed, while C900/905 is rubber gasketed, although they do have a fusible C900.

3) Solvent welded connections are considered restrained.

4) We typically use mechanical joint fittings. If you use a restrained mechanical joint cap and don't have a thrust block behind it, you need to restrain a number of the joints ahead of the cap. The number of joints restrained is dependent on the pressures on the line.
