Pumps: between bearing and overhung

Is there a method in choosing what sort of pump to pick when specifying a pump? Between bearing would give more support to the shaft? Are these chosen for larger pumps? Any help would be welcome. Thanks in advance.

Lets first make sure we are talking about the same thing.

By "overhung" I assume that you mean -horizontal axis, end suction design ( e.g. ANSI process pumps)

By "between bearing" I assume that you mean what is commonly called "double suction" in the pump industry.

There are many advantages/disadvantages to each type.

Suggest you purchase/review a text such as the "Pump Handbook" by Karassik.

I would tend to use broader definitions. An overhung pump is any pump where the impeller is overhung on the end of the shaft. It could be vertical or horizontal. It could be single suction or double suction (I know API no longer allows for double suction overhung. But there are a lot of them out there.) It could be end suction or top suction. It could be API or ANSI. A between bearings pump has the impeller in the center of the shaft between the bearings which are on either end. It could be single stage or multi-stage. It could be single suction or double suction. It could be aligned impellers or opposed impellers.

One other factor in the selection of pump built is the actual pump capacity together with application. What size are you thinking about? - give further detail and we can be more specific in our comments.
