Pump volute nomenclature

Hello,

While going through an old report in which the pump is mentioned to have a "8 in. x 6 in. volute". The pump is a vertical, single stage with a single volute. Does anyone know what does "8 in. x 6 in. volute" mean? What is the 8 inch and 6 inch referring to?

8 inch suction pipe diameter and 6 inch discharge pipe. These are nominal values determined by the pipe connection type.
