I'm investigating the design of a pump foundation. The ACI 351.3R doesn't define any shortcuts for small pumps, but I have run across a document at website civildesignhelp.info stating that dynamic analysis of pump foundations need not be performed if the weight of the machine is less than 25kN. The pump I'm designing for is 1900 pounds + motor so I suspect the total weight will fall under the limit. According to civildesignhelp the foundation for less than 25kN can be a concrete block that is 3 times the weight of centrifugal machines, whose width is 1.5 times the vertical distance from bottom of foundation to C.L. of the shaft. This approach is so much simpler than what I find in ACI, but I'm wondering if this is a widely accepted practice. The author of the article cites sources being from several books that I'm not familiar with, but it sure sounds good! Opinions, anyone?
