i have roof deck slab connecting supporting steel by 5/8" dia puddle weld.
due to wind uplift on the roof, puddle weld will be in tension.

is

0.3 * 70 * (phi * 5/8^2 / 4 )

correct for the tension capacity of puddle weld?

Sorry I cannot answer that question at the moment, but remember if you are using the deck in a diaphragm to consider the combined shear and tension forces...

that's ok, it's in AWS d1.3
i should have googled first before making a thread.

No...actually the perimeter of the puddle weld will be in shear. The controlling factor will be the attachment of the decking to the puddle weld, not the puddle weld to the joist.

If the puddle weld is "reinforced" as required by AWS, then you might have enough perimeter lap to give both a weld bond to the decking and a lapping mechanical confinement that will put your puddle weld in some tension.

I tried to upload a sketch but engineering.com kept kicking me out, so I'll try again later.
