Protecting Machined Surface during PWHT

Hi guys,

I seem to remember a company I worked with that would "paint" finished machined surfaces with a "chalky like" product.

I was used to try and reduce the amount of scaling during the PWHT process.

For the life of me I cannot remember what it was called.

If anyone knows of this product or knows of a similar product I would appreciate it greatly if you could share.

Can't attest to chalky-like products, but I've been on the receiving end of deoxaluminate primers being used to protect machined end preps during furnace PWHT. I lean towards prohibiting that practice whenever I can. Too much experience with the PWHT soak more or less impregnating the weld surface with the primer or any contaminants beneath it, and it creating NDE rejects for us after the fact, particularly with the GTAW process. Wire brushing alone proved insufficient for removal.

We use a product like you describe called Protect-O-Metal. I know this is late but hopefully the information is helpful.
