Is there a way to Promote the components in a sub-assy. without destroying all the other sub-assy's (of the same name)?

Totally a guess but...make the sub-assembly read-only. Then perform your operation, save, close, re-open and see if it looks right.

Open the sub assembly, do a save copy as. Return to the main assy and do a replace. It is now a new sub assembly. You may now promote it.
