PROJECTION VIEW FROM A SECTION VIEW

I have a question pertainig to creating a projection view from a section view. I started with an end view of a cylindrical assembly. With a vertical cut of the end view I created a section view. Now from the section view I created partial view by placing a horizontal line just above the area of the section view I needed to reveal. (I should point out I am a Solidworks 07 user). In the newly created view, the view is not sectioned, but is a shortened or partial projection of the assembly. Is this a correct drafting practice or permitted as far as a drawing standard....the software permits it, but I guess that doesn't mean it's right. I didn't find it in Y14.100-2000.

I don't remember exactly where it is specified, but it is not proper drawing technique to take a projection (or a section) from a section. I'm sure that I'll be corrected here if I'm mistaken.

I can't recall the reference either but I recall it's not correct as ewh says. Y14.100-200 probably wouldn't have it directly, may be in ASME Y14.5 or more likely ASME Y14.3 Single, Multiple, and Sectional View Drawings.

Unfortunately, half the specs we had were our Checkers personal copy so when he got laid off yesterday he took them with him and it seems 14.3 was one of them.

CAD systems have many things that contravene drawing standards. Some of this is just that standards in different country are different. A lot of it is because most users and programmers don’t know and/or don’t care if it’s correct. If enough customers ask for it the CAD package will eventually probably add it. I’ve been in a customer ‘round table’ at the conference for our CAD package and people were asking for all kinds of features that contravene accepted drawing practices.


KENAT, probably the least qualified checker you'll ever meet...

I'm not understanding 100%, but your writing I think you would call it a "Detail" (not Section or View) and be OK.

Yes, as long as it isn't ANOTHER section or a projected view, a detail of a section is perfectly acceptable.
