I want to project an array of circular protrusions 2mm from the face of part of a sphere. I was trying to do this with the normal protrusion but I didn't have much luck, and I was unable to select the curve. I also tried to use a pattern and a lofted protrusion.

I am quite new to SE, I am using SE12.

step 1 make a sketch
step 2 project curve on the sphere
step 3 normal protrusion
step 4 pattern

this is the way I would try it

If all the protrusions need to be projected normal to the sphere AND maintain a 'true' profile, you may need to use a combination of (eg) a revolved protrusion and circular pattern to create each 'row' in turn.

Revolved protrusions using Open Profiles are enormously powerful.
