Independent of any type of company, I would look at what is either weak or outright wrong and start improving from there. It is a continuous process. If something strikes you as "there must be a better way of doing this", you have found something to take a crack at. Some of my most satisfying successes have been not from shop floor improvements but from being able to streamline "beauracratic" processes.

a few places to start, they all have boatloads of texts and how-to books. Some good, some not so good.
