programming approaches

I am fairly experienced with the use of established plc programs using plcs from various manufacturers to commision out faults as well as to diagnose faults on long running kit.
i have some experiences of basic programming including the state machine approach but am interested in alternative approaches when programming for more complex systems can anyone recommend any books or web sites to help
