Hello

Can anybody shed some light as to how free-standing, sub-micron foils are made? I know most metals can be reduced to a submicron thickness via a combination of rolling followed by beating as is done with the production of gold leaf - however foils made in this fashion are riddled with numerous pinholes and consequently lack density. Somebody in a post mentioned an optimal alternative is “evaporation”. But aren’t evaporation techniques employed exclusively for permanent thin film deposition on to a substrate? How I wish he had elaborated. Anyway, hope somebody out there can help me understand.
