Process Engineer: Design eng vs System eng.

First off, I am not sure if here is right location for my question, please correct me if I am wrong. The question is:
In some companies the duty of process engineer is splitted to two areas: process engineer that does design and sizing and process engineer who is expert in developing P&ID (they name them system engineer).
Some other companies disagree with that and expect a process engineer does both duties.
What do you think? How popular are these two options? Which one is better from your point of view?

It really varies, both from company to company and from person to person.

I do know that some larger companies have a separate "systems" group that develop P&ID.

Most process engineers though, with some experience, I would expect to be able to do both. On large jobs, of course, there would be more segregation. On most medium and smaller jobs, I would expect it to fall to the same person/group.

I've worked in mainly smaller companies, the largest was about 400 in the top Fortune 500. As process engineer I did all sizing of equipment including valves and controls, all P&ID generation,all process chemistry & thermal, simulations, Process economics and finally material selection/specifications. My duties included Project Management of up to $10MM before it hit the PMO level.
