Problems making a boss feature

I'm trying to make a boss feature on a planar face, and I get "Boolean Operation on Solid Failed". There are no features that it would interfere with, and it's on an absolutely flat face. Any idea why I'm getting this?

Hi,

With this feature, you need to be away from the face when doing the profile (for example in a parallel plane) and then send the extent towards the face (through next option in the extent step).

So, when you are placing the boss(es) in the profile step, you are at the top of the boss if you want.

All I can think of is that you may be creating some sort of non-manifold body.

The parasolid kernel can not create geometry that is connected at a single edge. In other words, imagie drawing two squares attached at a corner vertex ONLY. If you extend these sketches in a protrusion, they will be connected by a singe line/edge and thus a non-manifold body.

The other typical non-manifold body case is when a circular boss is tangent to a side of a box. The tangent LINE is a single connected edge that creates the non-manifold issue.

Without seeing your geometry, that's all I can think of.

I'm definitely working with a manifold body, and understand that you can't have edge or point intersections. I've got a cup shape with an absolutely flat bottom, and I'm trying to create bosses at the bottom. I've changed my design based on fredrickmenage's suggestion, so that I'm starting on a plane 1/4 inch above the bottom of the cup, and have the extent facing down, but I still have the same error. I figured that I'd start on the face and project them upward, and that's how I started, but I can't find a way to make this work. The geometry is really pretty simple, but it just won't happen.

alright, I've got it all laid out now, and it's working. My only other need is to change the orientation. I have a 3-ribbed boss, but I need half of them to be turned 180. Is there any way to do this, or should I somehow create the other set as a second feature?

Hi,

What did you do to make it work ?

To rotate the bosses, edit the profile, right-click on the boss, choose 'properties' and enter the angle.

HTH,

Thanks for the angle info, Fredericmenage. The problem with the bosses was that I wasn't creating them from the plane above and protruding them down to the base plane. I also ran into an unusual bug, where every time I went back to the boss properties the slope of the runners would change. They kept resetting themselves to 15 degrees, so that the runners of the different bosses were intersecting one another. As soon as I changed it and hit 'return', it would go back to the 15 degree setting. By setting up all my boss parameters and saving the profile, I was able to select the boss I wanted directly from the ribbon bar, so it no longer reverted to 15 degrees, and it worked fine. I called UGS, and was told they'll look into it and incorporate it into the next update if it's found to be a problem.
