Promax is by far and away the best simulator on the market.

HYSYS sucks because they are way overpriced and they nickel and dime you every chance they get. Not to mention that their customer service is horrable.

PRO II is good for running oil simulations and thats about it.

Promax is way cheaper than HYSYS and provides the most accurate prediction about how plants will perform. As far as their Amine Sweetining, Claus Plant, Glycol Dehydration, and Gas Processing goes they are the best.
And by the way, their customer service is outstanding. If you send them an email it will be answered in about 10min.

I have used VMGSim as well, and it seems to be almost identical to ProMax from what I can tell, the thermodynamic package is also very powerful...might be worth checking it out if you're comparing costs..

Too many differences i.e price, thermodynamic model recommendation, solubility, interface, etc. Don't know which one you think is "main".

since others broke the ice, the low cost highest performance is WinSim. I've used it on a new design for mini LNG plant with 3 turo expanders and power requirements near world class units.

I've just performed an analysis of multiphase flow for 500 wells into a central system making low RVP crude, and multiple LPG products. I also modeled downhole equailibrium of the crude and gas.

I always add, its not the program its the programmer!!! All sims use the same EOS, Enthalpy, entropy data bases. WinSim has the lagest library of data bases and you can import your own if you don't like the 100 published ones.

SimSci's ProII is common in the refining and petrochemical fields. Hysys is dominant in Oil & Gas and seems to be a significant player in midstream and downstream areas as well. Both have problems with some non-ideal processes such as amine sweetening and glycol dehydration, to name two. Both do offer special packages for areas in which their signature products are known to be deficient, but those "add-ons" may fall short of more dedicated models.
