My firm is designing a buried junction box that will contain a sluice gate. The sluice gate will allow a local municipality to drain an amenity lake if needed when a large storm is approaching Houston.
My structural sheet will have the junction box and sluice gate on it. We have done lots of sluice gates recently, but I've always connected them to cast-in-place rectangular box culverts where I have continuous concrete behind the gate. I received the plans and the current proposed drain pipe is a precast 48" diameter RC pipe with an annular area behind the gate on the pressurized side.
I'm worried about leakage of water out into the surrounding soil in this annual area. I've looked for research on this but not found any.
My question is:
Does this annular region need waterstop or gasket of some sort? If so, any recommended products or research? Maybe I need to suggest that we need to switch to a rectangular box culvert where the rebar can be tied into the junction box walls and a continuous connection is formed?
Thank you in advance. I'll attach a picture below and then a PDF of the same image.
