PRESSURE VESSEL WITH AISI 4140 SHELL 1

Is there anything in Sect.VIII or Sect.IX that permits welding of a shell material with .42% carbon content to a one piece head/journal of SA36? I need a welded connection so I can't use a bolt on journal. SA649 cannot be used as the final hardness requirement will be less than that specfied.

What is your specific application and reference to Section VIII? Is this a rotating dryer?

Section IX does not provide guidance on maximum carbon content limitations of base materials. It provides a listing of ASME B&PV code acceptable materials and their classification (P-number) related to weldability.
