I am trying to understand how to calculate the force needed to split, along the grain, a piece of SFP dimension lumber or 3/4" D-fir flooring. As an archhitect, I am mathematically handicapped, no additional comments needed. I have a means of pushing a piece of wood against an axe head , like a log splitter, and am trying to figure out what capacity of "pusher" I need. I can easily get a "pusher" that will lift 200# and another that will lift 400# but have no way to calculate if either will do the job.
