I have a situation where the static pressure in the exhaust duct system is about 40 inches. I am not sure how to determine if I should use a 14 gauge duct or a 16 gauge duct. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

What is the application? Does sound matter? Thinner gauge will tend to 'tin-can' and make more noise when the fan is cycled. Is the fan cycled?

Tell us more about the system.

The application is a dust collection system. The duct from the various pieces of equipment is taken to a bag filter and from there to a carbon bed and then to a second carbon bed before the air is discharged by the fan. The bag filter has a pr. drop of 5 inches, and each carbon bed has 10 inches of pr. drop. The duct in question is between the filter and the first carbon bed, between the carbon beds and then to the fan. The duct is 18" round.

Thanks

This is a question for a mfr such as United McGill.

Check the SMACNA manual. It should have recommended duct gauges for the pressure you want.
