As per API 682 clause 8.1.11, all the piping and the reservoir / accumulator (storing barrier / buffer liquid ) has to be designed atleast to the MAWP of the pump pressure casing. Is this clause has to be strictly applied? Because, in practical case, the buffer fluid reservoir / barrier liquid accumulator will not experience the MAWP of the pump pressure casing while the pump is in operation. Application of this clause becomes much more complex and stringent requirement when the pump pressure casing is carbon steel where as the reservoir / accumulator vessels are stainless steel and that too for high temperature service pumps. Thanks to clarify , the importance and application of this clause and particularly to the mechanical seal flush plans like 52 / 53 seal flush plans.

This depends on the client specifications. If you have been asked in their specs to meet API682 then you have to follow or offer a deviation then discuss at a review meeting to explain your concerns. I agree with you but some End Users insist on this clause.
trust this helps
