Hi all,

I’m interested in learning more about the function of the pressure building circuit for cryogenic storage tanks. Wondering if anyone can suggest a good book on cryogenic storage systems which would cover this.

Specifically I would like to understand, for a vessel storing cryogenic product at its saturation pressure, and where product is transferred out with a transfer pump, if a pressure build circuit is required and why. As per my understanding, in a scenario without a pressure build circuit, as product is transferred out of the tank, the pressure in the vapour space would drop, causing flashing of liquid which would re-pressurise the vapour space to the saturation pressure.

Any guidance on the criteria for requiring a pressure build circuit and its functions would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Your question is more suitably posted in the "Chemical Process Development" forum, IMHO..

The Storage Tank Engineering forum is more geared toward the strength design and evaluation of Storage Tanks .. not the development of design loadings

Most cryo tanks are low pressure ( 50 to 100mbarg) that really don't like any level of sub atmospheric pressure. Like 4 inches of water column.

So you need to have a vapour pressurising line able to maintain pressure above the min of about 20mbarg.

Yes the liquid will try to vaporise, but will reduce temperature and there may not be enough heat to allow the liquid to create enough vapour.

It is basic process engineering here.

In vacuum insulated cryogenic tanks, there is a pressure build up circuit/coil along with pressure regulator valve, that automatically maintains the pressure in tank, if pressure/temperature decreases. while high pressure is relieved through PRV, resulting in wastage of product as well.

In case of PU insulated tanks, evaporator systems and refrigeration system are installed and both these systems work in conjunction to keep the temperature and pressure in specific ranges. Eg in case of Liquid CO2, there is a specific pressure temperature range to keep it in liquid. otherwise, it can even solidify as well if pressure temperature not gets maintained.

These are for large cryogenic tanks.
