Dear all,

I have to deal with a matter concerning the foundation engineering field which I am not familiar with.

The company that I am working for has chosen vibrex piling (with the case removed) for ground reinforcement. They assert that a vibrex pile, having the same length and surface area of a precast RC pile would have a greater load bearing capacity..

I do not agree with this idea.

Even if I have the same surface area of the precast pile, I would not have the same vertical compressing forces being exerted upon the pile surface of the precast pile that is driven by the hammer. And I believe that, this is why a certain volume of concrete pool is formed in vibrex piling after pulling the case back, in order to compensate the lack of friction forces that keeps the pile in place under the load, which is the case for precast RC piling.

Moreover, they intend to drive precast test piles at hand to estimate the load bearing capacity of vibrex piles on those they cannot conduct any test 28 days before the pile is installed. I don't think this is a good idea either.

I would appreciate if you share your opinions and comments on this matter.

Regards,

Turkmen TARI
