Pre-ATEX Electrical Equipment - Re-use

When ATEX first came about, I remember reading somewhere that it was ok to re-use pre-ATEX electrical equipment on new installation work (assuming the equipment is in good condition) & to re-furbish existing pre-ATEX equipment (e.g. motor overhauls). Could anybody name a standard or other document that states this?
