Sorry if this is a repeated question but I couldn't find an older post which answered the question.

How would PF correction be achieved on 500kW Turbine? I understand basic PF correction, capacity banks to raise PF and compensators to lower.

Any answers would be apprecaited

Thanks

Kev

Well, you can either get manufacturing info or take power measurements on the system and then you calculate the capacitance needed.

What are you trying to do? PF correction would not be made to a wind turbine. PF correction is made to loads, and a wind turbine is a generator. With that said, since a wind turbine outputs DC which is inverted into AC, the inverter will handle the power factor of any supplied loads.

There is no "typical" wind turbine generator, so the answer depends on the technology used. In some cases, automatically switched capacitors were used. In most new DFIG machines, there is dynamic power factor control that will maintain power factor between 1 and 0.95 leading or lagging at all points of load and under all conditions. Some machines have full inverters and can probably dial in whatever power factor you might want. The link below is a paper that has some basics on wind turbine types and var capabilities and limitations.
