Depends on your definition of “small”, and how fast you want to accelerate, then whether you want adjustable speed etc. (because some types of “small” AC motors cannot be speed controlled and those that can often have poor torque performance etc, but sone types of DC motors in wet environments can be problematic too).

You have to start with the size you need first. Here is a tool you can use for sizing, look at and click on the picture of a “rotary device”, it is literally a potter’s wheel…

A universal motor has good starting torque and simple speed control.

The downside is that it's brushed so it does have a shorter life expectancy than other motors.

lol, I have seen it happen! Customer needed a 5HP motor and drive, someone wrote it as “5.0HP” on the plans and they ended up with a 50HP combo. Oops…
