Potentiometers and silicone sealant 1

I am using a potentiometer in a an application and I have been told that using Silicone sealant near it could give off fumes that effect the resistance and give false readings.

I have looked at the data sheet and the fumes given off is Acetoxysilane (acetic acid).

Can anyone help regarding this.

Highest regards,
Russell........

If you fully oven cure the RTV or air dry in a well ventilated area there should be no problem.
There will be problems if RTV is applied to a metal surface and closed in a housing or enclosure uncured. The acid will corrode or disolve any metal it has been applied to.
Cure time will vary with how much is applied to specific area. A dab about the size of a pencil eraser will take approx. 2-3 hrs @ +65 degrees C in a circulating chamber.

Why not use digital pot ? it can be adjusted remotelly,
automatically etc. <nbucska@pcperipherals.com>

Have you tried to obtain a 2-part silicone compound without acetic acid?
