Portal column effective length AS4100

By 'Design of Portal Frame Buildings' (Woolcock et al):

"AS4100 requires members to be checked under axial load alone using Le determined from the frame elastic buckling load factor"

I can't find examples of how that should be done.

AS4100 Cl.6.3.2 directs one to Cl.4.6.3 to determine ke, where there's no mention of the above quoted method.

Any insight would be appreciated.

This is a difficult one.

Best option for portal frames is to carry out a buckling analysis (usually an optional add-on for the analysis packages such as spacegass).

I did see a paper on this giving a way to hand calculate it, but I cant remember where.
