Pneumatic Actuator Failure Mode - Buckling?

Anyone have any experiences with failure modes of a pneumatic actuator/cylinder? Any good resources out there that discuss failure modes or ways to predict failure?

The proposed system we are reviewing uses a fairly long and narrow cylinder and my guess is that there is some point where the cylinder will buckle if unsupported and assuming it isn't exceeding its max pressure. Thoughts?

This is covered in most cylinder catalogs, at least the thick ones.
The usual prevention for buckling is a longer cylinder with a stop tube.

When you say pressure I assume you mean loading. Buckling wouldn't have anything to do with pressure unless this was first dependent on the loading.

The manufacturer will give buckling load of cylinder depending on the mounting arrangement and extension.

At maximum extension and mounted between ends buckling load is lowest.
