You get a thicker weld!

This comes up a lot in my world. In simple terms, nothing bad happens, it's no different to doing a multi-pass weld. But it can be a problem from a fatigue / fracture point of view. So I really only start caring about it when there are oscillating loads, or the metal will be cold in service.
