PLC AC 31 failure

I experienced failure i.e total black out of ABB manufactured PLC AC 31 used for Excitation panels. This issue happened with Two excitation panels.
The PLC's were replaced reprogrammed & machine started. The investigation is on regarding to root cause of PLC failure. Did anyone experience the same also. The PLC's were in service for 8 years with machine shutdown for one or two months in between.

Please share your experiences or reasons attributed to this kind of failures.
