Plating mild steel for corrosion resistance to withstand 900C 1

I need to stop mild steel rusting from contact with water. Steel gets up to 900C so a plating will have to stand up to that.

Water is normal tap water and cannot be treated with rust inhibitors.


Any help?

If the temperature rapidly fluctuates from ambient to 900 C, then it is unlikely that standard electroplated coatings will be durable. Perhaps one of the nitride-type tool coatings, e.g. TiN, TiAlN, etc. CVD deposition tends to have better adhesion than PVD, although the deposition technology is astounding, and huge gains are made on a constant basis.
 
How big is the piece to be plated? Do the economics work out to make the part out of a different material and forgo the plating?
 
The protection might be goodtill the plating lasts.Advice ,to select an appropriate material for the application.

Part about 140X140X100 mm with 15mm holes.

"Has to be mild steel". Is the cost factor a constraint? Plating is not going to succeed.

Carbon steel will melt well above 900 deg C but will not last under repeated or continuous exposure to 900 deg C because of severe oxidation, loss of mechanical strength, and creep deformation. I would worry more about thermal fatigue damage if temperature does indeed fluctuate between ambient and 900 deg C.

The proper approach is to select a suitable base material that will handle exposure to water and exposure to 900 deg C versus any coatings. Try one of the 321H or 347 H stainless steel alloys.
 
metengr is spot-on correct.

The selection of coatings or plating is immaterial if the plated material degrades.

Carbon steel will degrade by a process known as "graphitization" when subject to a continuous temperature of about 450C
