I am designing a plate girder for a crane rail system. I have the moment and shear envelopes and have started the design. In the 14th ed of the Manual section J10.3 There are two (2) cases, when the compression force is greater than or equal to d/2 and when the compression force is less than d/2. My situation requires me to use EQN J10-4 and EQN J10-5a respectively for those conditions. EQN J10-5a greatly controls. So what I am curious about is if there is a way to design the web around EQN J10-4 and modify something at the ends of the girder when the compression force is less than d/2. My situation doesn't give me great control of changing web dimensions along the beam so if I have to design based on EQN J10-5a it will definitely be overkill along the rest of the length of the beam. Thank you.

I just read into the commentary and it discusses adding in stiffeners or a doubler plate. I missed this my first read through. If anyone else had any other ideas I would like to hear them still though. Thank you.
