I am reviewing some drawings for a façade structure on a building. There are perforated plates called out and a gauge of plate is given and the supports are clearly indicated and dimensioned. I am checking these as if they are beams. Is there other procedures to use for plate?
Some of the plate is perforated and some of the plate is solid.

If it’s got holes in it and is subject to two-way bending.....it's probably appropriate to model it using plate elements on some type of FEA software like STAAD.
 
holed or not, they'll work like in-plane shear webs.

holed won't react normal pressure.

Plates are part of a structure on the façade of a building.
The plates are subject to wind pressure.
 
Plates bent about their weak axis (out of plane bending) are just beams, but the allowable stress is normally increased per code. You have to deduct the holes from the section.
 
Thanks hokie66, I was looking at the plates as beams with the appropriate section values for the perforated plate and solid plate.
I was checking to see if there was another method.

ok, but won't some of the wind load be reacted by the sub-structure ?

i guess you could ...
1) apply all the wind load to the remaining panel (ie increase the pressure to account fot the lost area)
2) apply a portion of the wind load to the sub-structure
3) neither (apply the wind load as defined by code to the surface of the facade, ie the panels was they really are, with holes)

I think I see where you are going.
This façade is being attached to an existing building.
All sub-structure for the façade will be checked as will the connections.

The wind load that goes through the holes will indeed contact the building.
Right now I am concerned with checking the plate and structure of the façade structure
 
Sperling, to answer you original question there is an alternate way to look at plates for this particular application. If you have access to an edition of Roark's Formulas for Stress and Strain there should be a chapter that address plate design (I have the 6th edition and chapter 10 addresses plate design). I've included a link below that basically encapsulates the formulas found in Roarks.


Although the link is to an aluminum composite material manufacturer the plates that you are reviewing could be looked at in a similar fashion. With regards to the perforation patterns a FEA of the plate would be the best option to determine the allowable stress in the panels themselves. If you don't have access to those types of programs I'd suggest determining the effective section properties due to the perforation pattern and use those values to determine the stress and deflection within panel face based off the Roarks formulae.
