Placing weldments in assemblies (V14)

Has anyone had any trouble placing weldment parts, and relating other parts to them, in assemblies with V14? The part I am trying to place (a weldment within a sub-assembly) seems fine but I cannot graphically pick the target part (which also happens to be a weldment within a sub-assembly) and even when I pick it from the edge bar, I am unable to select a face on the target part. Task manager tells me that it is not seeing the part at all, because hovering over the target part with the mouse does not increase the CPU usage as you might expect if it was trying to pick several parts.
Any clues?

Sorted - for some reason the sub-assembly had been made non-selectable. D'oh!
