Does anyone know of good guidance on the corrosion rate of pits in underground petroleum storage tanks?

Unprotected steel 1,000 gallon tank buried in the ground in the 1970's.

Not only pitting will attack unprotected steel but general corrosion as well. If there were access to the surface (which may not be the case, being the tank buried), ultrasonic inspection might be able to assess the remaining thickness. Is it possible to empty the tank and inspect from the inside? The type of soil and the environment may have influenced the amount of attack.

Krown Corporation in Canada has excellent corrosion inhibiting products. Since I used on my equipment in Jan 2005, I have not since any corrosion problem. Is there any product better than that? I want find out.

Is there any product better than thatout there? I want find out. I am trying determine whether I should use on the newer equipment for preventive maintenance.

There is no rule of thumb. It depends on soil conditions, resistiviy, moisture, etc. The only guidance I would give is yes it will corrode. After 30 yrs I would be suprised if it still holds product.

A sensitive leak test could be done if you cannot dig for inspection. I would recommend replacement.
