Piping Isometric Drafting Standards

Is anyone aware of standards pertaining to drafting piping isometrics?

As far as I am aware an ISO is supposed to be generated from the 3D model and left alone. I am being questioned by my bosses (who do not have much piping experience) as to why the ISOs are sometimes "messy" and have lines crossing each other, etc., etc.

Just looking for some confirmation that this isn't something that I missed a long time ago when I started drafting. Every companys ISOs that I have ever seen have never "detailed" their ISOs, and I have seen some nasty ISOs that you just had to stare at for an hour just to understand what was going on because there were so many lines crossing and crisscrossing.

Thanks for any help.
