I'm designing a cantilevered rolling gate to go across a 42 foot roadway. The rails of the gate will be round pipe with a total length of 65 feet (including the cantilever counterlength) and supported every 5 feet by the gate itself. I'm trying to decide whether to use pipe or HSS.
I noticed that the spec for ASTM A500 has a note which states that this material may not be suitable for dynamically loaded welded structures where low temperature notch toughness is important. These gate rails will see a little dynamic flex due to bouncing of the gate (and guards who like to ride the gate!) and this project is in Colorado Springs, CO. Most likely, the contractor will have to weld two or more pipe sections together to get the 65 foot length.
Would the A53 stuff be better for this application?
